A Course In Miracles

What is A Course in Miracles?

ACIM-3rdEd A Course in Miracles is a spiritual self study course.  The book contains the Text, a workbook with 365 daily lessons, a Manual for Teachers and supplements.  Although the terminology is mostly Christian, the philosophy is more eastern in nature.

From the Preface of the book:

“How It Came

A Course in Miracles began with the sudden decision of two people to join in a common goal.  Their names were Helen Schucman and William Thetford, Professors of Medical Psychology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.  It does not matter who they were, except that the story shows that with God all things are possible.  They were anything but spiritual.  Their relationship with each other was difficult and often strained, and they were concerned with personal and professional acceptance and status.  In general, they had considerable investment on the values of the world.  Their lives were hardly in accord with anything that the Course advocates.  Helen, the one who received the material, describes herself:

Psychologist, educator, conservative in theory and atheistic in belief, I was working in a prestigious and highly academic setting.  And then something happened that triggered a chain of events I could never have predicted.  The head of my department unexpectedly announced that he was tired of the angry and aggressive feelings our attitudes reflected, and concluded that “there must be a better way.”  As if on cue, I agreed to help him find it.  Apparently this Course is the other way.

“This is a course in miracles, please take notes.”  These words we born out of a frustration in relationships.  Bill Thetford, the head of the Medical Psychology department at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, made an impassioned speech to his assistant, Helen Schucman, after a rather contentious  meeting with the department he headed.  Helen replied that Bill was right and that she was going to help him find the answer, the answer to how can we relate better to each other.  Shortly after this is when Helen started to hear those words in her head, “This is a course in miracles, please take notes.”.  Out of those notes A Course in Miracles was born.  The book consist of a text and a workbook with 365 daily lessons.  It is designed not just to deepen intellectual understanding, but experience.  From Lesson 9 in the Workbook:

“But while you may be able to accept it intellectually, it is unlikely that it will mean anything to you as yet.”

Early in the lessons, The Course is showing us that this is not about intellectual understanding but meaning.  Meaning is much deeper, and it is meaning that we are after for real healing.

A Course In Miracles is a course in changing perception.  This is a course in mind training. To change your outer world you MUST change your inner world.  By that I mean you must change your perception of the world and, your thoughts about the world and yourself.  This is a course in how to do that.  It offers another way of looking at the world and your self talk.  The language and terminology is Christian but it is not at all about religion, it is all about inner strength.  This course aims to teach you how you can relate more peacefully to the world and each other.  It aims to teach you how to find peace and inner calmness in a world of violence and chaos.  This course doesn’t just explain what this means and give you more theory, but also it gives you 365 daily lessons in a workbook to help you achieve the goal.  It is through doing, through experience that the real breakthrough can occur.

If you are tired of the drama, pain and chaos of everyday life; if you are looking for meaning in your life; if you are on a quest for inner peace and calmness, then this is a course for YOU!
